How Microneedling Works

During microneedling, each channel that we make with the signals the skin to begin its repair process. This response activates fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing new collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin are structural proteins that give skin its firmness and elasticity. Preparation

Before your appointment, we review your skin concerns and determine the best approach for your treatment. You may need to avoid certain products, such as retinoids or exfoliants, for a few days so your skin is calm and ready. Arriving with clean skin helps us get started right away.

Procedure

Facial microneedling with the typically begins with cleansing the skin, followed by applying a topical numbing cream for comfort. Once your skin is ready, we treat each area of your face, neck, or décolletage. The entire process usually takes less than an hour.

Recovery

You might have some redness and sensitivity for a day or two, and you might feel like you have a mild sunburn on your skin. Make sure to keep your skin clean, moisturized, and protected from the sun. You can put on makeup after the microchannels heal over, usually after a few days. Let your skin heal, and don’t pick at any microscabs or use exfoliation.

Results

You may not see results right away, but as your body starts producing more collagen, you might start to notice improvements. It could take several weeks after your treatment, or you may need a couple of sessions to get the results you want. After your series of treatments, you can come one or more times per year for maintenance treatments.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Microneedling?

Most healthy adults with skin that is free of active infections can be good candidates for microneedling. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, prone to keloid scars, or have a current skin flare-up, it is best to wait until a later time. You might need to take a break from certain medications or active ingredients before starting your treatment.
